What is 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive?
Despite being called an all-wheel drive (AWD) system, 4MATIC® is truly so much more than your typical AWD. There are actually a few variants of the 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive system, giving drivers the ability to customize how their Mercedes-Benz models handle tough terrain and less-than-ideal road surfaces.
4MATIC® Permanent All-Wheel Drive performs just like AWD on other vehicles, sending power continuously to all four axles and optimizing the vehicle’s traction, handling and ride smoothness.
4MATIC® Variable All-Wheel Drive can be more accurately compared to the four-wheel drive systems featured in other types of vehicles. In normal driving conditions, power is only sent to the front axles, but when needed, power is automatically sent to all four axles instead. This gives you the best of both worlds: fuel efficiency when in front-wheel drive mode and capability when in four-wheel drive mode.

When a loss of traction occurs, 4-ETS redistributes power to help the vehicle regain traction and get out of mud, sand or gravel. This system makes the 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive system precise and intelligent, so you can count on it to keep you safe and in control while off-roading, taking on a steep hill or driving in adverse weather conditions (such as heavy snow, like we often see here in New York).
